We ran SmileSet through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews the way a real buyer would, plus a full technical crawl. Here's exactly where AI engines name you, where they hand the customer to NewSmile and AlignerCo instead, and what closes the gap.
Method: 11 neutral category queries across 3 AI engines (US IP, no personalization) · live technical crawl of smileset.com · competitor citation mapping. No data supplied by SmileSet.
When someone asks an AI which company inherited SmileDirectClub, you're the answer. When they ask the AI which aligner to actually buy, you're not in the room. That split is the entire opportunity.
Where you already show up. Across all three engines, SmileSet is correctly named as the company that acquired SmileDirectClub's technology, 100+ patents and digital platform. You also surface for "is SmileSet legit" and "SmileSet reviews." This is earned, defensible, and uniquely yours — no rival can claim it.
Engines confirming: ChatGPT · Perplexity · Google AI Overviews
Where the money is — and you're missing. On the high-intent buying queries ("best at-home aligners," "best SmileDirectClub alternative," "nighttime aligners best brand"), AI engines recommend NewSmile, AlignerCo and Candid. You're not listed — even on "SDC alternative," a query your own history should own.
Winning instead: NewSmile · AlignerCo · Candid
Each row is a real query we ran. "Cited" means SmileSet appeared in the AI's answer; "Absent" means it didn't, and we logged who did instead.
| Buyer query | Engine | SmileSet | Who appears instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| "what company bought SmileDirectClub technology" | ChatGPT · Perplexity · Gemini | Cited | — You own this |
| "clear aligner alternatives after SmileDirectClub & Byte closed" | Perplexity | Cited | Listed among others |
| "is SmileSet legit" / "SmileSet reviews" | ChatGPT · Perplexity | Cited | Trustpilot, BBB, Newswire |
| "best at-home clear aligners 2026" | ChatGPT | Cited | NewSmile, AlignerCo, Candid alongside |
| "best SmileDirectClub alternative" | ChatGPT | Absent | AlignerCo, Candid, Byte |
| "affordable aligners with licensed dentist oversight" | ChatGPT | Absent | AlignerCo, Candid, Byte |
| "Byte alternative" | ChatGPT | Absent | Byte-focused results, no SmileSet |
| "most reliable DTC clear aligner company 2026" | Perplexity | Absent | AlignerCo + review sites |
| "nighttime clear aligners best brand" | Perplexity | Absent | NewSmile, AlignerCo |
| "best clear aligner brands 2026" | Gemini / AI Overviews | Absent | Invisalign, ClearCorrect, Candid, Byte, AlignerCo |
The pattern is consistent across engines: SmileSet wins backward-looking queries (SDC history, "is it legit") and loses forward-looking buying queries. The brands beating you here aren't doing it with a better product — they're doing it with comparison content, review-site placement and Reddit presence that the engines pull from.
AI answers are assembled from sources the engine trusts and can retrieve. We logged every source cited in your category queries. Three things stood out:
The pages AI engines cite most for buying queries are comparison and "best aligners 2026" articles — and they're dominated by NewSmile's own blog and third-party review sites that rank SmileSet low or omit it entirely.
Perplexity and ChatGPT lean heavily on Reddit and head-to-head comparison pages. The "SDC alternative" and "nighttime aligner" threads they pull from mention rivals, not SmileSet — despite your stronger claim to that conversation.
You win "who bought SDC tech" — but that authority isn't linked to a verified brand entity (no Wikidata record), so engines don't carry it over to "best alternative" queries where it would matter most.
Your pages declare Organization and rating markup, but no Product, Offer or FAQ structured data. Price, treatment options and FSA/HSA eligibility are facts engines extract directly — and right now they can't read yours cleanly.
AI crawlers read your site before they cite it. The good news: nothing is blocking them. The fixable news: speed, structured data and freshness signals are leaving citations on the table.
robots.txt allows GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. No Cloudflare AI-bot block. Nothing is shutting the engines out.
Indexed in Bing, which is the index ChatGPT search actually queries. Present and healthy.
Mobile PageSpeed scores 40/100, with a 5.96s largest-contentful-paint. Slow loads cause crawler timeouts on freshness-sensitive engines like Perplexity. Desktop is fine (72/100).
Organization + AggregateRating present. Missing: Product, Offer, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList — the markup that lets engines read price, options and answers directly.
sameAs links to LinkedIn, Trustpilot, BBB, YouTube. No Wikidata entity — the record that lets engines connect your SDC-successor authority to your brand everywhere.
Sitemap is present and referenced in robots.txt, but IndexNow isn't enabled. IndexNow pushes new/updated pages to Bing in hours instead of days — directly feeding ChatGPT.
SmileSet acquired SDC's technology, patents and digital platform, and was built by an SDC co-founder. That's a story no competitor can copy. Yet on "best SDC alternative," AI engines hand the customer to AlignerCo and Byte. Lock that inheritance into a verified entity and the right comparison content, and you convert a backward-looking fact into the wedge that wins forward-looking buying queries.
Done correctly and within the bounds of how you describe the relationship — technology successor, not a continuation of SDC's obligations — this is the most defensible position in the category.
Confirmed across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in this audit · June 2026
This is how we'd move SmileSet from "cited on history" to "recommended on purchase." Engines move at different speeds, so the plan front-loads the fastest wins.
We sell AI visibility and citation presence — not ranking guarantees, not patient or sales-volume guarantees. Anyone promising "#1 in 30 days" in this space is selling you something we won't.
Realistically: technical signals activate in 2–4 weeks, initial movement on AI citations typically takes 8–12 weeks, and durable cross-engine authority builds over 6–12 months. AI citations fluctuate month to month by design, so the goal is the highest defensible share of the conversation, not a fixed position. Everything we publish stays within accurate, non-misleading claims — especially for a medical-device category — and we never represent SmileSet as continuing SmileDirectClub's guarantees or obligations.
We work async on purpose. Instead of a live video call, message me on Google Chat for a focused 15-minute written exchange — I answer your questions directly and send a short presentation video showing exactly how I'd improve SmileSet's AI visibility. No calendar tetris, no pressure: you read it, you watch it, you decide.

Findings are based on neutral queries run against ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews from a US IP with personalization disabled, plus a live technical crawl of smileset.com, in June 2026. AI engine outputs are probabilistic and change frequently; results represent a snapshot, not a permanent state.
Figures attributed to SmileSet or third parties (review counts, ratings, patent counts, FDA-cleared status, "former-SDC" discounts) are claims reported by SmileSet or by independent publishers and are presented as such — not independently verified by Citevio.
